Why Humor Plays A Significant Role In Raising Kids

It’s no secret that laughter is the best medicine.

When it comes to raising kids, having a sense of humor is essential.

In tough times of raising kids, humor helps forge strong bonds and provides fun.

Here are some fun examples of how humor can benefit your family.

Why humor is great for parenting

How important is humor in raising kids?

It’s critically important that you laugh at yourself.

You have to be able to laugh at yourself.

Why?

Raising kids is so hard.

There’s no manual about it.

There’s nobody that says this is what you do and when.

If you don’t have the ability to laugh at yourself a little bit, it’s going to be a tough journey in raising kids.

It’s also important for your kids to laugh.

Do you know who it’s the most important for them to laugh at?

YOU!

Here’s the thing, it makes you more real.

It makes you more vulnerable.

It makes you more relatable as their Mom or their Dad.

I have to tell you, though, that it’s not hard for me to get the kids to laugh at me because I just do things that are laughable (and I laugh with them).

Why you should encourage your kids to laugh

I actually encourage my kids to poke fun at me from time to time.

Maybe it’s a saying that I got from my Grandpa or my Father.

In fact, my dad was famous for saying, “oh, that guy’s as busy as a one-legged man at a butt-kicking contest”.

Now that’s funny when you say it and your kids are like, “where did that come from?”.

My kids will often laugh at how I pronounce certain words too.

We did family meetings and my wife and I would always try to start off with something funny that happened to us that week.

As we got older, my wife and I developed a little more gray hair here and there and so we started realizing how much humor it created with our kids.

How a cool location or moment can get kids to laugh

On of our favorite places on earth is on our property called Sunset Point on Sunset Lake.

We fell in love with this property, recently, and all over again during the crazy quarantine days.

My wife and I love watching sunsets at this very point almost every single night.

We’ve had this body of water for nearly two decades, but we never named it.

One night, we said “this is Sunset Lake and this is Sunset Point”.

You’re probably asking, “where’s the humor come in on all of this?”.

Well, it so happens that the field on Sunset Point happens to be shaped by a heart.

Right at the end of the heart (or right on one of the humps of the heart) is where we stand on sunset point.

While we were looking at the field in an overhead view, my wife and I said “Gosh, that’s Love Field”.

Then we started talking about how cool would it be to have a little cabin on Love Field at Sunset Point on Sunset Lake.

Of course, what better name for the cabin than “The Love Shack”?

Oh my goodness, our kids were laughing so hard at us and somewhat blushing a little bit because, we, their parents were talking about loving them and being in love with each other.

Cheesy and apparently hilarious to our kiddos.

We’ve continued to come up with these really fun names so that we can have fun and tease our kids but also so that our kids can tease us.

Now, every time we say those names, we know what kind of reaction we’re going to get.

That’s why we say them.

We say them with affection because it is so important that you have humor in your family, that you’re not afraid to laugh at yourself, and you’re not afraid to laugh at each other.

This whole thing called “family”… it’s tough.

The journey to raising kids is even tougher.

So give yourself a break and laugh a little because it’s worth it.

This will make the journey so much more enjoyable.
